Grand Union originated in 1872, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and was originally known as the Jones Brothers Tea Company. The Grand Union name was adopted in 1928. In 1931, there were seven hundred stores. By the mid-20th century, Grand Union was based in Wayne, New Jersey and was one of the nation's largest grocers. However, corporate buyouts and consolidations in the 1970s and '80s weakened the organization. In 2001, its stores and assets were acquired by New Hampshire's C & S Wholesale Grocers.
