Pleasanton, California-based Safeway formed from the October 1926 merger of Los Angeles' Sam Seelig Company-Safeway Stores (1912) and Idaho's Skaggs Stores (1915). Safeway expanded its national presence by acquisitions carried out between 1926 and 1958. The Canadian market was entered in 1929. Divisions operated in the UK (1962-1987), Australia (1963-1987) and West Germany (1964-1985).
