Seafood City originated with a store in National City, California in 1989. Today, the chain is based in Pomona, California. Its stores carry a wide array of Filipino and Asian foods. The first branch outside of California opened in Nevada in March 2002. By late 2017, there were Seafood City stores in Washington State, Hawaii, Illinois and Ontario, Canada.

The rambling WESTFIELD SOUTHCENTER mall in Tukwila, Washington houses a mall-based Seafood City operation. It occupies the 44,000 square foot ground floor of a former Mervyn's. The Westfield SouthCenter Seafood City held its grand opening in July 2010. The mall had been dedicated in 1968.
